🌞 How to Care for a New Wood Fence

After a new fence is installed, one of the most common questions we hear is how long it takes for the wood to dry out before it is ready for staining or sealing.

New lumber holds moisture, and giving it time to dry properly helps it last longer and hold its color better.

Why curing matters

• Fresh wood still has moisture inside
• Sun and air help the boards dry evenly
• Sealing too early can trap moisture
• Waiting helps prevent peeling or uneven finish

How long to wait

Most fences need about four to eight weeks of dry weather before you stain or seal them. The exact timing depends on the type of wood, the season, and how much sun your yard gets.

How to check if the wood is ready

Drip a little water on a board

If the water beads up, the wood is not ready

If it soaks in, the wood is ready to stain or seal

A few things to keep in mind

Keep the fence clean while it cures. Try not to lean heavy items against it, and avoid watering plants directly onto the boards during the first few weeks.

Once the fence is sealed, it will hold up much better against weather and everyday use.
